[VIDEO] CMP PRESENTS . . .ABOUT THE CRYPTO UPDATE FROM THE CDC!

Episode 1.01 of CMP Presents is all about the Cryptosporidium update from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). We’ve all seen countless news alerts from all over about Crypto in swimming pools. In this episode, we discuss the most recent alert from the CDC and what they think about water quality and safety. It can all sound intimidating and scary.

Not to worry! Stephen and Susie make it easy to understand by answering the questions: What is Crypto? How does it get in the water? How can you treat Crypto once it’s in the water?

Plus, find out if Susie truly is the Cryptosporidium Expert when she comes under the ultimate test of her knowledge. 😃

HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE LATEST CDC WARNINGS ABOUT WATERBORNE ILLNESS

What you need to know and how you can make pools safer for swimmers.

The CDC recently released a statement with alarming statistics about Cryptosporidium. According to the report, there’s been an average 13% annual increase in Crypto outbreaks from 2009-2017.

WHAT IS CRYPTOSPORIDIUM?

Crypto is a resilient and nasty germ found in swimming pools that causes severe intestinal problems. The effects can be worse for the very young, old or anyone with a compromised immune system.

WHY IS THIS SO ALARMING?

The CDC specifically states that Crypto is such a tough parasite that it can survive for long periods even in properly maintained pools. Chlorine is in the pool to keep it clean and safe, but Crypto is chlorine-resistant. Swimming pools need more than chlorine alone to fight this tough bug. Swallowing even the smallest amount of water that’s tainted with Crypto can make you sick. Crypto can also be spread in fun environments that attract children–like water parks and splash pads–as well as natural environments including lakes and ponds.

ARE SWIMMING POOLS REALLY THAT DIRTY?

Have you seen the news release that went viral on social media about how people basically use swimming pools like bathtubs? According to a recent survey (created on behalf of the Water Quality & Health Council), half of the people surveyed do not shower before getting in the pool. What’s even more disturbing: it might be more accurate to describe some pools, not as a bathtub, but as a toilet. More than a quarter of surveyed swimmers admit they would get in the pool within an hour of having loose bowels.

HOW IS CRYPTO SPREAD IN SWIMMING POOLS?

The CDC report states that Crypto is spread by swallowing contaminated water. It’s easily spread in pools because you’re sharing the water and all the germs in it. The CDC also states the leading cause of disease outbreaks in the US linked to water– specifically linked to swimming pools or water playgrounds–is Crypto.

Reports of waterborne illnesses are in the thousands. And while they are generally from commercial pools, there is no reason to assume Crypto doesn’t exist in residential pools. Homeowners just don’t have the testing and reporting requirements of commercial pools. Many of us don’t think twice about going straight from aquatic centers and water playgrounds right into backyard pools.

Humans aren’t the only vehicle for transporting this intestinal villain. How many people do you know that allow their pets into the pool? You see it all the time! When given the opportunity, dogs will jump into swimming pools without hesitation. And they aren’t likely to get a bath beforehand.

The good news is that keeping pool water clean and safe IS possible!

HOW CAN YOU HELP PREVENT INFECTION?

Here are three simple steps swimmers can take to help.

1. Avoid swallowing pool water. We all do it without realizing it, and children are especially likely to swallow water. Pay attention and teach children to never swallow pool water.

2. Always rinse off before swimming. You bring everything on your body with you into the pool.

3. Last but not least, stay out of the water if you’ve been sick. The first step to keeping pools safe is avoiding contamination in the first place.

There are also proactive measures that can make even contaminated water safer. The Model Aquatic Health Code, published by the CDC, recommends using secondary sanitizers that keep working where chlorine stops.

The most powerful secondary sanitizer is Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP). AOP is the future of swimming pool sanitization and the most powerful advanced sanitizer on the market. Keep reading to learn how AOP can help keep your pool clean and safe.

WHAT IS AOP AND HOW DOES IT KILL CRYPTO?

AOP is a combination of Ozone and Ultraviolet Light (UV-C) designed to remove organic material altogether from water. When Ozone reacts with UV-C, it transforms into highly-reactive oxidizers called Hydroxyl Radicals that can destroy 99.9% of harmful contaminants in pool water. This oxidation process happens extremely fast, almost instantly.

By allowing AOP to oxidize organic and inorganic compounds, chlorine is free to work better. Even with AOP, it’s important to have a residual sanitizer in the pool. AOP destroys microorganisms and breaks down chloramines. Chlorine is a residual in the pool that reacts with contaminants in the open water, including when the pump is off.

CMP offers AOP sanitizers for both commercial and residential swimming pools. The DEL AOP 50 and DEL AOP Pro commercial systems are NSF-50 certified for Supplemental Disinfection of Pools and Spas. This level of NSF rating is only available on DEL brand products from CMP.

Combining an advanced sanitizer with a residual sanitizer is an integral part of what we call the Complete Modern Pool®. The news reports might be scary, but it is possible to keep a pool safe from Crypto. Every pool can stay clean, clear and safe with Advanced Sanitizers from CMP.
